In December 2021, the project of “Creation and Industrial Application of New Type Green Herbicides” (Project No. 2021YFD1700100) led by KingAgroot was officially approved by Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China. It is reported that the project focuses on resistant weed control, and it is one of the 2021 key & special projects of “Prevention and Control of Agricultural Non-point Source Pollution & Heavy Metal Pollution and Research and Development of Green Inputs” of the National Key Research and Development Program of China.

Data show that the annual grain losses caused by weed infestation in China are as many as 20 billion kilograms. Herbicide application is the most economical and effective way to control weeds. However, with the long term extensive use of herbicides, different species of herbicide resistant weeds are gradually out breaking. Some representative resistant weeds include horseweed (Conyza canadensis) and goosegrass (Eleusine indica) resistant to glyphosate in non-crop areas, barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) resistant to penoxsulam or quinclorac and sprangletop (Leptochloa chinensis) resistant to cyhalofop-butyl in rice fields, crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis) and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus) resistant to nicosulfuron in corn fields, Japanese foxtail (Alopecurus japonicus) resistant to fenoxaprop-p-ethyl and flixweed (Descurainia sophia) resistant to tribenuron-methyl in wheat fields, which are causing serious damages and are difficult to control.

To address the practical problems such as gradual failure of traditional herbicides, shortage of alternative herbicide products, complex crop varieties and frequent rotation and inter-planting, KingAgroot takes the lead to jointly carry out the project of “Creation and Industrial Application of New Type Green Herbicides” with nine colleges/institutes and enterprises such as Guizhou University, Central China Normal University, Nankai University and Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc.
According to the reports, the project mainly targets at resistant weed control and focuses on two key scientific issues of “targetability of biological macromolecules and druggability of chemical micromolecules”. In this project, we will take discovery of new herbicide targets and design of new molecule structures as entry points to innovate some key technologies which are restricting the high-quality development of the industry, such as clean production of herbicides, research and development of high-efficiency formulations, and herbicide usage reduction & damage control in the fields, thus accelerating the creation of novel herbicides.
To date, in order to control resistant weeds, KingAgroot has independently created and commercialized 4 novel herbicides, Cypyrafluone, Bipyrazone, Tripyrasulfone and Fenpyrazone, as well as discovered several candidate herbicides such as KAI151162/QYR601(fufengcao’an in Chinese pinyin), KAI-141012 (fulvancaozhi in Chinese pinyin), KAI-161452/QYNS101 (fucaoding in Chinese pinyin), etc.
At the time the National Key R&D Program of China is completed, KingAgroot will be able to provide technical and product support for the innovation and development of green agricultural inputs in China and comprehensively promote the new pesticide innovation capacity in China, which will be helpful to improve China’s pesticide innovation chain and safeguard the improved crop production and farmer income as well as the quality and safety of agricultural products.
