On July 8, the 2025 National Science and Technology Awards Ceremony was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. At the ceremony, the project “Development and Application of Novel Green Herbicides for Rice and Wheat Fields,” jointly completed by KingAgroot CropScience and its partners, won the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. The achievement also received significant attention from Farmers’ Daily, one of China’s most authoritative agricultural media outlets.

Recently, the 2025 National Science and Technology Awards Ceremony was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. As the highest-level honorary awards in China’s science and technology field, the winners of the 2025 National Science and Technology Awards were officially announced. The project “Development and Application of Novel Green Herbicides for Rice and Wheat Fields,” jointly completed by Qingdao KingAgroot CropScience Group, won the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, marking another achievement in winning a national science and technology award.
The emergence of herbicide-resistant grass weeds in rice and wheat fields has long posed challenges to stable and increased grain production. With resistance to widely used herbicides continuing to rise, declining control efficacy and concerns over crop safety have created an urgent demand for new, green, efficient, and safe herbicide solutions. Addressing these challenges has become critical for ensuring sustainable agricultural development and stable food production. Supported by National Key Research and Development Program, KingAgroot CropScience, together with Guizhou University, Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, National Agro-Tech Extension and Service Center, Shandong Agricultural University, and other partners, carried out more than 10 years of collaborative research. The team established the world’s first systematic intelligent molecular design platform for herbicide discovery, achieving original technical breakthroughs across the entire innovation chain.
In terms of industrial application, the project also developed green and clean production processes. Based on China’s rice and wheat production systems, the team developed integrated weed management solutions, including the “Two Monitoring and Three Precision” approach for wheat fields and the “One Pre-emergence Treatment, One Monitoring and One Post-emergence Control” strategy for rice fields, providing standardized weed management solutions tailored to different agricultural regions.
To date, these technologies have been included in the National Weed Management Technical Guidelines issued by the National Agro-Tech Extension and Service Center for six consecutive years. The project has also received four science and technology awards, including the First Prize of the Guizhou Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, and has been granted 45 invention patents.
The commercialization of this achievement has effectively addressed key challenges in controlling resistant grass weeds in rice and wheat fields, such as lack of innovative herbicides and poor control performance. The technologies have helped reduce pesticide inputs per unit area, improve the stability and sustainability of agricultural production, and provide scientific and technological support for safeguarding food security and advancing green agricultural development.
